Know Your Risk Factors

Age

Risk increases significantly after age 50. Men over 65 account for the majority of diagnoses.

Race & Ethnicity

African American men are at higher risk and are more likely to be diagnosed at an advanced stage. Regular screening is especially important.

Family History

Having a father, brother, or son diagnosed with prostate cancer more than doubles your risk.

Diet & Lifestyle

A diet high in red meat and high-fat dairy products, combined with low physical activity, may increase risk.

Signs & Symptoms

Early-stage prostate cancer often has no symptoms. That is why regular screening is so critical. When symptoms do appear, they may include:

  • Frequent urination, especially at night
  • Difficulty starting or stopping urination
  • Weak or interrupted urine flow
  • Pain or burning during urination
  • Blood in urine or semen
  • Pain in the back, hips, or pelvis that does not go away
  • Painful ejaculation

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, please speak with your doctor right away. Do not wait.

Talk to Your Doctor About Screening

The PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) blood test is the primary screening tool for prostate cancer. Most guidelines recommend men begin discussing screening with their doctor at age 50 — or at age 40–45 if you are African American or have a family history of prostate cancer.

Screening is a conversation, not a one-size-fits-all decision. Talk to your doctor about your personal risk and what screening schedule is right for you.
